A strong serve can set the tone for an entire match. Focus on a consistent ball toss, rotate your shoulders for power, and follow through toward your target. Practicing your footwork and staying relaxed under pressure will also help you serve with more confidence. 1. Perfect Your Ball Toss
A reliable toss is the foundation of every good serve. Aim to release the ball at the same height and spot every time, slightly in front of your body. If your toss drifts side to side, your whole motion has to compensate, which leads to inconsistent placement and less power.
2. Rotate Your Shoulders and Hips
Power comes from rotation, not just arm strength. As you load into your serve, turn your hips and shoulders away from the net, then unwind them explosively as you swing up to contact. This kinetic chain adds significant pace without straining your shoulder.
3. Snap Your Wrist at Contact
A relaxed, fast wrist snap at the top of your swing generates topspin and extra racket head speed. Gripping the racket too tightly throughout your motion limits this snap, so keep your hand loose until the moment of contact.
4. Follow Through Toward Your Target
Where your racket finishes says a lot about where the ball goes. Let your arm continue naturally across your body after contact, and your feet should land inside the baseline. Cutting your follow-through short often causes serves to sail long or wide.
5. Practice Under Pressure
Serving well in practice is one thing, but doing it on big points is another. Build pressure into your practice sessions by keeping score, setting a minimum first-serve percentage, or serving with a friend watching. The more comfortable you are serving under stress, the more it will hold up in matches.
